Chapter 2: Three Words From Next Door

Part 2 — continued below.

---

Rob came home that evening with a folder under his arm and a look on his face I hadn't seen in years.

Maya was still quiet at dinner.

Leo ate without saying a word.

Rob watched them both, then looked at me across the table.

"I made some calls today," he said.

"Turns out there's a law about this."

"About apples?"

"About property lines.

About what falls on your land and who legally owns it."

I stared at him.

"Dale doesn't own those apples once they cross the fence.

Hasn't for nine years."

He opened the folder and slid a printed page toward me.

I didn't understand all of it, but I understood enough.

"So what do we do with that?"

Rob looked at the kids, then back at me.

"We don't do anything yet.

But I called someone else too.

A guy I know at the county office."

"Why?"

He paused.

"Because Dale's tree isn't the only issue.

That branch has been over our line for years.

And apparently, there's a process for that."

He folded the paper slowly.

"He made our kids feel like criminals in their own yard.

I want him to understand what that costs."

Then his phone buzzed on the table.

He glanced at it and went completely still.

"Rob.

What is it?"

He turned the screen toward me.

It was a message from our next-door neighbor on the other side.

Three words.

*I saw everything.*

---

What does that message mean — and what did the neighbor actually see?
