Chapter 2: They Found the Contract
We danced.
And the silence followed us across the floor.
I kept my eyes forward, but I could feel it — two hundred people holding their breath.
Not because of me.
Because of him.
"They're staring," I whispered.
"Let them," Giovanni said calmly.
"Who are you?"
"Right now?
Your husband."
Across the room, Tyler hadn't moved.
His jaw was tight.
Vanessa had her hand on his arm, but he wasn't looking at her anymore.
He was looking at Giovanni with an expression I'd never seen on his face before.
Fear.
Then an older woman in a silver gown stepped directly onto the dance floor and stopped in front of us.
Giovanni slowed but didn't stop.
"Giovanni." Her voice was low and controlled.
"This is not the place."
"It never is, Mother."
She looked at me then.
Not with cruelty.
With something closer to warning.
"You don't know what you've stepped into, young lady."
Before I could answer, a man in a dark suit appeared at her shoulder and leaned close to her ear.
Her expression didn't change, but her hand tightened around her evening bag.
She looked back at Giovanni.
"They found the contract."
Giovanni's hand pressed slightly firmer against my waist.
He didn't explain.
He didn't slow down.
He just said, quietly, "Don't let go, Jessica."
And I realized the dance had nothing to do with Tyler anymore.
