Dr.
Kline didn't know what to say.
He stood there holding the cardboard box, looking down at this tiny girl with no shoes and no family and no idea how the world actually worked.
He was still searching for the right words when a voice came from behind him.
"How much does she need?"
Sarah turned around.
The man standing in the corridor was tall, in a dark coat, with the kind of stillness that made the busy hallway seem to slow down around him.
He wasn't a doctor.
He wasn't a patient.
He looked like someone who had walked into the wrong building — except his eyes were fixed on Sarah like he had been looking for her for a very long time.
Dr.
Kline straightened.

"How much," the man said again, quietly, "does Anne Miller's surgery cost?"
Sarah's breath caught.
"You know my mommy?"
The man crouched down to her level.
His jaw was tight.
His eyes were red at the edges, the way grown-ups' eyes got when they were trying very hard not to cry.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Sarah."
Something moved across his face.
Something that looked like pain and recognition at the same time.
He reached out and very gently touched the bracelet in the box.
The one that spelled SARAH without the R.

His hand was shaking.
"Who gave you this?" he whispered.
