Chapter 2: The Suit That Matched

The photographer listened to everything.
When I finished, she didn't say "are you sure?" She said, "I know exactly how to do this."
That was three weeks before the wedding.
I didn't bring it up again with Daniel's mother.
I smiled at Sunday dinners.
I said thank you when she offered opinions about the centerpieces.
I let her think she'd won.
Daniel asked me once if I was okay.
"I'm fine," I said.
"I just want the day to be perfect."
He looked at me a little longer than usual.
But he didn't push.
The morning of the wedding, Nathan showed up in a suit that matched Daniel's exactly.
Mom had arranged it quietly.
He stood in the doorway of the bridal room and his eyes went wide.
"You look like a bride," he said.
"That's the idea," I told him.
He laughed.
That big, full laugh that sounds like Dad's.
I took his arm.
When we reached the doors of the church, I heard Daniel's mother somewhere behind us.
I heard her intake of breath.
I heard her lean toward someone and start to whisper.
I didn't turn around.
The doors opened.
Nathan stood up straight.
Squared his shoulders the way Dad used to.
And we walked.
What Daniel's mother saw from that pew — and what the photographer captured in the very next moment — is something she will never be able to take back or explain away.
