Chapter 2: What She Tucked Beneath the Letters

Part 2 ⬇️
Inside the box were three folded letters — one for me, one for Leila, and one for Mom.
Each had our names written in Nora's careful, looping handwriting.
Even after all these years, I recognized it instantly.
She used to write our names on everything.
Our lunch bags.
Our drawings.
The back of photographs.
Leila pressed her letter against her chest without opening it.
"I can't," she whispered.
"I can't read it yet."
Mom had already turned away, her shoulders shaking.
I unfolded mine with trembling fingers.
The paper was thin.
The ink had faded slightly at the edges.
But her words were clear.
*"Don't be sad on our birthday.
I need you to promise me that."*
That was the first line.
I had to stop reading.
Leila looked at me.
"What does it say?"
I couldn't answer.
My throat had closed completely.
Then Mom turned back around — and she was holding something none of us had noticed before.
Something that had been tucked beneath the letters at the bottom of the box.
A small photograph.
The three of us.
Taken in the hospital.
Nora in the middle, arms around both of us, smiling as if she had no reason not to.
On the back, in that same careful handwriting, were four words.
Mom read them aloud — and Leila collapsed into my arms.
