Chapter 2: What He Held With Both Hands

He pulled out a small wooden bird.
It was carved from the same oak as the box.
The wings were open.
The feathers weren't perfect — you could see where the chisel had slipped, where he'd sanded it back and tried again.
But it was a bird.
Unmistakably a bird.
And it was standing on a small base he'd carved the words into.
I had to lean forward to read them from where I was standing in the wings.
*For Marianne.
My big sister.
My best friend.*
I couldn't breathe.
He looked out at the audience, then back at me, and he said into the microphone — calm, like he'd practiced it a hundred times — "She always looked after me.
So I made her something to look after."
Someone in the crowd made a sound.
Then someone else.
Then the whole room started clapping.
Not polite clapping.
The kind that builds from the back and rolls forward until you can feel it in your chest.
I was shaking.
I couldn't move.
The girl next to me in the lineup put her hand on my arm and said, "Go.
Go to him."
I walked out onto that stage.
Danny saw me coming and his whole face changed.
He held the bird out with both hands, the way he'd carried the box — like it was the most important thing he'd ever held.
"Sorry it's the only thing I have to give you," he said.
I couldn't speak.
I just took it.
And then he whispered something in my ear that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

What Danny whispered to Marianne in that moment broke everyone in the room.
