Chapter 2: What He Built While We Were Silent

It was a wooden box.

Not a keepsake box.

Not something you'd buy at a store.

Something he had built himself, by hand, over eighteen years.

The wood was smooth from being touched.

There were small marks along the side where he had carved a name.

Rosie.

Hannah ran her fingers over the letters and still didn't say a word.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't look at my husband.

I had spent eighteen years in that house and never once heard him go to the garage and work on something.

I thought he was just sitting in there.

Grieving quietly the way men do.

He had been building her a memorial.

One piece at a time.

Every September 9th.

For eighteen years.

Hannah finally looked up at me.

"Did you know about this?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Mom."

The way she said it.

Not angry.

Not crying.

Just waiting.

Like she had been waiting her whole life for me to answer one honest question and I had always found a reason not to.

My husband put his hand on the box and said, "She didn't know.

I never showed her."

Hannah looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said, "What else didn't I know?"
