Chapter 2: What Rose Knew

The bodyguards caught the man before he reached the door.

They brought him back.

He was sweating, his phone already in Joseph's lieutenant's hand.

Joseph didn't look at the man.

He looked at me.

"I need you to come with me.

Right now."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

"Audrey." His voice was low.

Controlled.

"That photograph is already moving.

Someone sent it before we stopped him."

"Sent it to who?"

He didn't answer.

His lieutenant leaned close and said something I couldn't hear.

Joseph's jaw tightened.

"How many?"

"Three cars.

Outside.

They were already here before the photo."

Joseph turned to me slowly.

"They weren't following me tonight."

I stared at him.

"They were following you."

The room felt like it tilted.

"That's impossible.

Nobody knows who I am."

Joseph picked up the old Polaroid from the table and held it beside my face.

Same nose.

Same jaw.

Same eyes.

"Someone did," he said quietly.

"Someone has known for a long time."

My phone buzzed in my apron pocket.

I pulled it out.

A message from Mom.

No words.

Just four characters.

*Run.*
