Chapter 6: What Gerald Owned

Rosalind arrived two days later.

She came straight from the airport to Daniel's hotel room, set her bag on the chair, and spread three printed pages across the small table without sitting down.

"Gerald Harmon," she said.

"Where do you want to start?"

Daniel looked at the pages.

"The worst part."

"He's done this before." She tapped the first page.

"Not identically.

But the pattern is there if you know what to look for.

Two women in the past twelve years.

Both in difficult situations when he found them.

Both became financially dependent on him.

Both eventually disappeared from public record — no social media, no professional listings, no community ties."

"What happened to them?"

"One moved abroad, apparently voluntarily.

The other — I can't find her at all.

Her last known address was a property Harmon owned." Rosalind sat down.

"He finds women who are vulnerable.

Alone.

Frightened.

He offers stability.

And then he makes sure they stay."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Sarah was in the hospital after the accident.

The real accident — the car crash that I was told kjlled her.

She would have been alone.

Frightened."

"And someone told you she hadn't survived."

"A hospital administrator.

He showed me paperwork."

"Which Harmon could have arranged."

"And someone told Sarah I had left her." Daniel looked at the table.

"That I had chosen to go."

"Which she believed because she was alone and in pain and the man standing in front of her had the resources to make it look true." Rosalind folded her hands.

"Daniel.

He didn't just separate you.

He made each of you believe the other had abandoned them."

The room was very quiet.

"He's been controlling her for four years," Daniel said.

"Yes."

"And Lena has grown up with him in her life."

"Yes."

Daniel stood up and walked to the window.

The street below was ordinary — people walking, a delivery van, pigeons on a ledge.

Everything normal.

Everything completely normal.

"I want to go to the police."

"With what we have right now, they will listen politely and do nothing.

Harmon has no crjminal record.

Sarah has not made any complaint.

From the outside it looks like a woman who left a marriage and built a new life.

We need more."

"What kind of more?"

Rosalind was quiet for a moment.

"We need Sarah."

"She told me to leave."

"She told you to leave while Harmon was watching." Rosalind looked at him steadily.

"That is not the same thing."

Daniel turned from the window.

"She said something at the park," he said slowly.

"Before he got out of the car.

She said, *You're supposed to be g0ne.

I was told you were g0ne.* Not *I thought you left.* Not *you abandoned me.* She said she was *told.*"

Rosalind nodded.

"She knows something happened.

She may not know the full shape of it.

But she knows."

"Then I need to reach her."

"Carefully.

If Harmon finds out you've made contact before we're ready, he will move her.

He's done it before — I found a lease termination from four years ago, same week as the accident.

He had a new apartment ready."

Daniel thought about the red bucket swinging from Lena's hand.

The way she had looked back at him over her shoulder as the car door closed.

"How do I reach her without him knowing?"

Rosalind reached into her bag and pulled out one more sheet of paper.

On it was a name and an address — a community center three blocks from the neighborhood where Daniel had seen Sarah.

"She volunteers there," Rosalind said.

"Tuesday mornings.

Has done for two years.

It's the one thing in her schedule that Harmon doesn't accompany her to." A pause.

"I spoke to the director this morning.

She said Sarah always comes alone."

Daniel looked at the address.

"Tuesday," he said.

"Four days from now." Rosalind put her hand briefly on his arm.

"Don't go early.

Don't wait outside.

Go in, be calm, and give her the chance to choose."

"And if she tells me to leave again?"

Rosalind held his gaze.

May you like

"Then we find another way.

But I don't think she will."
