Chapter 2: What the Will Was Never Allowed to Say
My hands wouldn't stop shaking as Noah unlocked the second video.
"When did you record this?" I asked.
"Last Tuesday," he said quietly.
"When you were at work."
I pressed play.
The footage was shaky, shot through a cracked door.
Vanessa was on the phone, pacing the kitchen.
Her voice was low but clear.
"He won't be a problem.
Once I'm legally his wife, I file for full custody of Noah.
Daniel loses the boy and the house in the same month."
I couldn't breathe.
"She was going to take you from me?"
Noah nodded.
His eyes were wet.
I stood up slowly and turned to face Vanessa.
She wasn't crying anymore.
"You don't understand the full situation, Daniel."
"Then explain it.
Right now."
She glanced at my mother, then back at me.
"The man in the video…
he's not just a lawyer."
My mother stepped forward.
"Vanessa.
Don't."
I looked at my mother.
"You know him?"
Her face had gone the same white as Vanessa's.
The room felt like it was closing in.
Vanessa's voice dropped to almost nothing.
"He's the reason your father's will was never read."
