Chapter 2: The Light Cutting Through the Dark

Part 2 ⬇️

He came to the cabin just after eleven.

I kept my eyes half-closed and my breathing slow.

Every part of me wanted to scream.

Instead, I let him slide his arm under mine and whisper, "Come on, sweetheart.

The fresh air will help."

He was so gentle.

That was the worst part.

He guided me up the steps toward the rear deck.

His father was already there, standing near the railing with his back to us.

His mother sat in a deck chair, not watching — deliberately not watching.

Graham leaned close to my ear and murmured, "Almost over."

I didn't know if he meant the night or me.

Then my phone vibrated once inside my robe pocket.

Graham froze.

"What was that?"

"Nothing," I whispered.

"Just dizzy."

He relaxed — but his grip on my arm tightened.

We were four steps from the railing when I heard it.

A low hum in the distance.

Getting closer.

Graham heard it too.

He looked out at the dark water and went very still.

His father turned around slowly.

Neither of them spoke.

Because the light cutting through the dark wasn't a wave.

It was a boat.

And it was heading straight for us.
