Chapter 2: The Call He Wasn't Supposed to Make

Part 2 ⬇️
I let him cry for a moment.
Then I said, calmly,
"Mark.
We're in Disney World."
Silence.
"You took them to Disney World."
"I took *us* to Disney World.
The kids are having the time of their lives."
Another long pause.
When he spoke again, his voice had changed.
The tears were gone.
Something harder had replaced them.
"Sarah, I swear, when I get back—"
"When you get back," I said, "we'll talk.
But right now, I'm watching our daughter meet Cinderella for the first time.
And I'm not going to miss it."
I hung up.
My phone lit up immediately.
Not Mark this time.
It was Jason.
I stared at the name on the screen.
Jason never called me.
Not once in six years.
I almost didn't answer.
"Sarah." His voice was low, like he didn't want to be overheard.
"I need you to know something.
About why Mark really wanted those three days."
My chest tightened.
"Jason—"
"It wasn't golf, Sarah."
The kids were laughing behind me.
My youngest was spinning in circles, arms out, pure joy.
And I was standing there, frozen.
"Then what was it?" I whispered.
He didn't answer right away.
And in that silence, something told me I wasn't ready for what came next.
