Chapter 2: Four Words He Should Have Kept to Himself

Vivian snatched the envelope from the courier before I could say a word.
Her fingers tore it open.
I watched her eyes move across the page — once, then again, slower.
The color left her face.
"What is this?" she said.
Caleb crossed the foyer.
He read over her shoulder and went very still.
"It's a notice," I said quietly.
"Samuel filed it this afternoon.
The estate is under formal administration.
No assets can be transferred, sold, or removed until probate closes."
Vivian's hand dropped.
"The jewelry," Caleb said under his breath.
Vivian turned to him sharply.
"Don't."
But I had already heard it.
I looked at her.
"What jewelry, Vivian?"
She said nothing.
I thought about the last time I visited Dad in the hospital.
He had asked me, twice, whether his mother's ring was still in the house safe.
He said Vivian had promised him it was.
He made me write it down.
I pulled out my phone and called Samuel back.
"The house safe," I said.
"Is it covered under the estate freeze?"
A pause.
"Everything inside that property is covered, Hannah.
If anything has been removed in the last thirty days, that is a serious matter."
Vivian set the envelope down on the entry table.
Her hand was shaking.
Then Caleb said something I was not expecting — four words, spoken so quietly I almost missed them.
"She already moved it."
