Chapter 2: The Vial With No Label

I stood there staring at Julian, waiting for him to open his eyes and say something.
Anything.
He didn't.
Victoria swung her legs off the bed like she'd had the best sleep of her life.
No headache.
No squinting.
No sign of the woman who had supposedly been too drunk to walk downstairs.
"I'll go freshen up," she said brightly, patting Julian's arm as she passed him.
Not a quick pat.
A slow one.
The kind a wife gives a husband on an ordinary morning.
My stomach turned.
I pulled back the sheet on my side of the bed to get a better look at the stain.
That was when I noticed something I had missed before — a small glass vial on the nightstand.
Empty.
No label.
"Julian." My voice came out steadier than I felt.
"What is that?"
He finally opened his eyes.
But he didn't look at the vial.
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen on his face before.
Not guilt.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"Elena, I can explain—"
The bathroom door opened and Victoria stepped out, fully composed, already dressed.
She glanced at the nightstand.
Then at me.
Her smile didn't waver.
But her eyes did something that made my skin go cold.
She looked at that vial like she already knew exactly what it was.
