Chapter 2: The Second Name on the Account
Three days after the wedding, Richard called.
Emily's phone lit up on the breakfast table.
She froze when she saw his name.
"Don't answer it," I said quietly.
She didn't.
But he called again.
Then a third time.
Then he sent a message.
*"Emily.
We need to talk before this goes any further.
For your mother's sake."*
Emily set the phone face-down.
Her hands were steady this time.
"He knows," she said.
I nodded.
"Someone told him."
What we didn't know yet was who.
Only four people were aware that calls had been made: Emily, me, Marcus Reed, and one other person I had trusted with a single detail the morning after the wedding.
Someone had talked.
That afternoon, Marcus called me back.
"Daniel.
We pulled the financial records on that account opened in Emily's name."
"And?"
A pause.
"There's a second account.
Same pattern.
Different name."
"Whose name?"
Another pause.
Longer this time.
"Her mother's."
Emily was standing in the doorway.
She had heard every word.
The color left her face.
"He did it to her too," she whispered.
