Chapter 1: The Anniversary Dinner

On Our Wedding Anniversary, My Husband Asked for an Open Marriage — So I Said Yes…
But Not for the Reason He Expected
My husband waited until our **tenth wedding anniversary dinner** to tell me he wanted permission to sleep with other women.
We were seated across from each other in a beautiful restaurant, dressed up for a night that was supposed to celebrate ten years of marriage.
Ten years of building a life together.
Ten years of raising children, managing a home, surviving sleepless nights, stressful days, bills, responsibilities, and everything else marriage had thrown at us.
I lifted my glass, thinking we were about to toast to everything we had created together.
Instead, my husband leaned back in his chair and told me he had an idea that could supposedly make our marriage "better."
"What if we opened the marriage?" he asked, as casually as if he were suggesting we try a new restaurant next weekend.
For a few seconds, I just stared at him.
I honestly thought I had misunderstood.
Surely the man sitting across from me on our anniversary had not just suggested that we start sleeping with other people.
But then he kept talking—and somehow, every word made it worse.
"You're always exhausted from the kids and the house," he explained.
"This way, I could go out and have fun with other women, and you wouldn't have to worry about keeping me satisfied."
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
After everything I did every single day—the children, the house, the endless responsibilities that apparently left me too "exhausted" for his liking—his solution wasn't to help me.
It wasn't to take something off my plate, spend more time with the kids, or make an effort to reconnect with his wife.
His solution was for **him** to go out and date other women while I stayed home handling the very responsibilities that were supposedly causing the problem.
And the most unbelievable part?
He genuinely seemed to think he was being considerate.
For one furious moment, I imagined throwing my drink straight into his smug face, grabbing my purse, and walking out of that restaurant without another word.
I wanted to ask him how long he had been thinking about this.
I wanted to know whether there was already another woman.
I wanted to tell him exactly what I thought of his ridiculous little proposal.
But then, as I watched him sitting there waiting for my reaction, something inside me suddenly went very calm.
Because another idea had occurred to me.
A much better one.
Why should I argue?
Why should I beg him to understand how insulting his suggestion was when I could simply give him exactly what he claimed to want?
Maybe the only way he would understand what an "open marriage" actually meant was to experience it himself.
So instead of getting angry, I smiled.
Then I slowly lifted my glass.
"Fine," I said.
"We can open the marriage."
The change in his expression was immediate.
His entire face lit up.
He looked almost stunned by his own good fortune, like he had walked into that anniversary dinner expecting an argument and somehow walked away with permission to live out every fantasy he had been imagining.
He had absolutely no idea why I had agreed.
And he definitely wasn't prepared for what I said next.

I took a small sip of my drink, looked him directly in the eyes, and smiled.
"But I have ONE condition."
