Chapter 2: The Phone He Flipped Face-Down

Part 2 ⬇️
His smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded slowly, like he was waiting to make sure he'd heard me correctly.
"A condition?" he repeated.
"Yes," I said.
"One condition.
If this marriage is open, it's open for both of us.
Not just you."
The smile was completely gone now.
"That's…
that's not what I meant," he said.
"I know exactly what you meant," I told him.
"But that's my condition.
Equal or nothing."
He sat back.
The confidence he'd walked into that restaurant with had quietly left the building.
"You don't actually want that," he said.
"You're not that kind of person."
I looked at him for a long moment.
"You just asked me, on our anniversary, to let you see other women while I stay home exhausted with the kids.
And you're telling me what kind of person I am?"
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Then his phone buzzed on the table.
He reached for it faster than I'd ever seen him move.
Turned the screen face-down without looking at me.
And that was when I understood.
This wasn't a new idea he'd come up with over dinner.
Someone had already been waiting for his answer.
