Chapter 2: The Message From Wife Number Two

"That signature isn't mine," I said.
My voice was steady but my hands were shaking.
Daniel didn't flinch.
"You signed it last week.
You were tired.
You probably don't remember."
"I would remember signing away my inheritance, Daniel."
Margaret stood up from the bed and smoothed her dress like we were discussing the weather.
"You're being dramatic, sweetheart.
It's your wedding night.
Come downstairs and we'll have coffee."
I held up the marriage certificate.
"Who is she?"
The room went completely silent.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"That's old.
It means nothing."
"It means you're still married to someone else.
That means our ceremony tonight was—"
"Enough." His voice dropped.
Cold.
A voice I had never heard from him before.
Margaret took a small step toward me.
"Put that down.
You don't understand what you're holding."
"Then explain it to me."
She glanced at Daniel.
Something passed between them — not panic.
Calculation.
Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*Get out of that house.
Right now.
He's done this before.
I was wife number two.* 😳
I looked up.
Daniel was already moving toward me.
