Chapter 2: What She Did to Father

Part 2 ⬇️
The woman in the navy suit didn't look at me.
She looked at my mother.
"Mrs.
Calloway?" she said.
"I'm Detective Reyes.
We spoke this morning."
My mother nodded once, slowly, like she had been expecting this moment for a long time.
I stared at her.
"Mom.
What is this?"
She didn't answer.
Vanessa stood just inside the doorway, flanked by both deputies.
All the confidence was gone.
Her face had gone the color of old paper.
"This is insane," she said.
"I spilled something.
That's not a crjme."
Detective Reyes opened a folder.
"Ms.
Calloway, the adhesive damage to the dress is one matter.
The fraudulent insurance claim filed against your sister's policy this past March is another."
The room went completely still.
I turned to Vanessa.
"What insurance claim?"
She said nothing.
"Someone filed a claim on your dress policy," Detective Reyes said, looking at me now.
"Reported it stolen.
The payout was processed six weeks ago."
Jenna grabbed my arm.
"Vanessa." My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"You filed a claim on my dress before you destroyed it today?"
My sister's jaw tightened.
She looked away.
Then my mother said something so quietly I almost missed it.
"She did the same thing to your father before he d*ed."
