Chapter 2: Before Midnight

I shoved the communicator behind the vanity panel and pushed it shut.

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.

The door opened.

Lucas stepped inside.

He was still holding his champagne glass.

His eyes moved to me on the floor, then to the vanity, then back to my face.

"What are you doing down there?" he asked.

"I felt dizzy," I said.

"I slid off the bed."

He set the glass down slowly.

"You should be resting."

"I know." I let him help me up.

His hands felt the same as they always had.

That was the worst part.

He guided me toward the bed and pulled the blanket up.

Then he reached for the pills on the nightstand.

"Take these," he said.

"You'll feel better by morning."

I looked at the two small white pills in his palm.

"I already took some earlier," I said.

"My stomach can't handle more."

Something crossed his face.

Just for a second.

Then he smiled.

"Of course," he said.

"Get some sleep."

He turned off the lamp and left.

I lay still in the dark, listening to his footsteps fade down the corridor.

Then I heard him stop.

And quietly tell someone just outside the door —

"She's suspicious.

We move before midnight."
