I took one slow breath.
Then I walked calmly to the front desk.
"Sarah," I said quietly, "please pull up the owner access profile."
Sarah's hands moved immediately.
Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.
"Yes, Mrs.
Montgomery."
Amber let out a sharp laugh.
"Did she just say Mrs.
Montgomery?
That's MY name.
Who does this woman think she is?"
Mark stopped smiling.
Something shifted in his face — a flicker of confusion he couldn't hide.
Sarah turned the screen slightly toward me.
I entered my private code.
The one only I and my general manager knew.
The screen changed.
Sarah straightened and looked directly at Amber.
"I apologize for the confusion, Mrs.
Montgomery." She paused.
"I was speaking to the other Mrs.
Montgomery.
The one who owns this resort."
The lobby went completely silent.
Amber's smile disappeared so fast it was almost funny.
Her eyes darted to me, then to Sarah, then back to me.
"What did she just say?" Amber whispered.
Mark had gone pale.
His mouth opened but nothing came out.
I looked at my son — really looked at him — and said calmly, "I think it's time we had a conversation.
All three of us."
Then my phone rang.
It was my attorney.
And the timing could not have been worse — or more perfect.
