The woman didn't say a word to me.
She looked at my neighbor and said, quietly but clearly:
"You told me this driveway was yours to use."
The room went still.
My neighbor's face changed.
"That's not — I never said —"
"You told me it was shared property." The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys.
She held them out toward me, not toward my neighbor.
"I'm so sorry.
I had no idea."
I grabbed them and ran.
I got my son into the car and drove.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking the whole way.
At the ER, they took him back within minutes.
His heart rate was dangerously high.
The doctor said another thirty minutes of delay could have made it much worse.
I sat in that waiting room thinking about my neighbor's face when she said, "I'm not asking my guests to leave."
Not a flicker of concern.
Not one second of hesitation.
When I got home that night, there was a note tucked under my front door.
I almost didn't open it.
But when I did, what I read made my stomach drop.
It wasn't from my neighbor.
It was from the woman with the black SUV — and she had written down something my neighbor had been telling people about me for months.
