Richard didn't go back to his table that night.
He asked Emma to sit with him in a quiet corner of the ballroom, away from the crowd.
His business partners watched from across the room, confused.
His assistant kept checking her phone.
Nobody approached them.
"Where are you living?" Richard asked.
Emma looked down at her uniform.
"A shared apartment.
Three of us in two rooms."
Richard was quiet for a moment.
"And your father — Leo — did he leave you anything?"
Emma let out a short, tired breath.
"He left me debt.
Medical bills from his last year.
I took this job to pay them off."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"How much?"
She shook her head.
"It doesn't matter."
"Emma.
How much?"
She told him the number.
He didn't flinch.
But something behind his eyes shifted.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at it — and froze.
Emma noticed.
"What's wrong?"
Richard didn't answer right away.
He turned the phone face-down on the table.
"Nothing," he said.
But his voice had changed.
Emma looked at the phone, then back at him.
"Mr.
Cole…
you just went pale.
The same way you did when I said my father's name."
Richard stood slowly.
"There's something I need to show you." He paused.
"But not here."
