Chapter 4: Seventeen Years of Small Lies

Ethan asked everyone to leave the room.

His aunt, two cousins, and the family friend who had been visiting all filed out without a word.

The door clicked shut.

Only Ethan, Sophia, Richard, and Claire remained.

"Sit down," Ethan said.

No one moved.

"Please," he said.

"Everyone sit down."

They did.

Sophia chose the chair nearest the door.

Ethan stood.

He couldn't sit.

He picked up the letter again, read it once more, then set it back down.

"Tell me about the other calls," he said to Claire.

Claire unlocked her phone.

"There are three more.

I recorded them over the past six weeks.

I didn't know what I was going to do with them.

I just knew something was wrong."

"Play them."

Sophia leaned forward.

"Ethan, you don't need to do this right now.

We're all upset.

Let's take a breath and—"

"Play them," Ethan said to Claire.

The second recording was shorter.

Sophia's voice again, same unknown man.

*"The camera in the hallway — does he ever check it?"*

*"He barely knows how to use his phone.

He's not checking anything."*

*"Good.

Because if he reviews the footage from last Tuesday—"*

*"He won't.

I'll handle it."*

Claire stopped it there.

"Last Tuesday," Ethan said.

"What happened last Tuesday, Sophia?"

Sophia pressed her lips together.

Richard answered instead.

"I fell.

In the kitchen.

She was the only one home." He paused.

"She didn't call anyone for forty minutes."

Ethan stared at his wife.

"I was frightened," Sophia said.

"I didn't know how serious it was."

"Forty minutes," Richard said again.

Not angry.

Just precise.

"The paramedics said he was fine," Sophia said quickly.

"He was fine.

Nothing was broken.

There was no lasting—"

"He's seventy-five and he was on the floor for forty minutes," Claire said.

"While you were on the phone with someone making plans."

"That is not what happened."

"Is that what the camera shows?"

Sophia's mouth closed.

Ethan sat down heavily in the chair across from her.

He rubbed both hands over his face, then dropped them.

"I want to understand something," he said.

"And I need you to be honest with me.

Just once.

Just right now." He looked at her steadily.

"Did you marry me for the estate?"

Sophia's expression shifted into something practiced.

Wounded.

Familiar.

"How can you even ask me that?"

"Because I'm looking at seventeen years and I'm trying to find the line.

Where it started.

Whether any of it was real."

"Of course it was real.

Ethan, I love you.

This — what you're doing right now — this is exactly what he wants." She pointed at Richard.

"He has never accepted me.

From the beginning.

He turned Claire against me, he changed his will, he installed cameras in his own house to trap me—"

"He installed the camera," Claire said, "because you told him last month that you were thinking of having him assessed for dementia."

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

"She told him his memory was going.

That she'd noticed things.

That it might be time to think about his capacity to manage his own affairs." Claire's voice stayed even.

"I was there for part of that conversation.

I didn't understand what she was doing until later."

Sophia stood up.

"I was concerned about him.

That is a completely reasonable concern for a man his age—"

"He doesn't have dementia," Claire said.

"His doctor confirmed it four months ago.

Full cognitive assessment.

She knew that."

The room went quiet again.

Richard looked at his hands.

Ethan looked at Sophia.

"You told him his mind was going," Ethan said slowly.

"When you knew it wasn't."

Sophia's chin lifted.

"I was trying to open a conversation about his future care.

That's all."

"You were trying to make him doubt himself," Claire said.

"So that when the letter came up, he'd be easier to challenge."

Sophia turned to face her directly.

"You have always hated me.

From the day Ethan brought me home.

Everything you're doing right now is about that.

Not about your father.

Not about the truth."

Claire didn't raise her voice.

"There's one more recording."

May you like

Sophia went very still.

"I think," Claire said, "you should hear it before you say anything else."
