Chapter 1: The Blue Dot at the Edge of Town

My wife was four hours late coming home and her phone went straight to voicemail, so I checked her location on our tracking app — but when I drove there and saw what she was doing, I completely forgot how to breathe.

My wife, Maeve, is a pediatric nurse.

Her shifts are long, but she is fiercely reliable.

Yesterday morning, she kissed my cheek at the front door.

"I'll be home by 7:15," she smiled.

"I'll pick up Thai food on the way back.

Love you."

"Love you too," I told her.

We have a strict rule: if she's going to be late, she texts me.

But last night, by 11:00 PM, she was four hours late.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

I didn't immediately panic.

I tried to stay rational.

I called the hospital ward first.

"She clocked out right at 7:00 PM," the charge nurse told me.

"She said she was heading straight home."

I called her sister, then her two best friends.

No one had seen her.

I even called the local precinct.

"Unless there's a documented medical emergency, sir, you have to wait twenty-four hours to file a missing person report," the dispatcher sighed.

That was when my hands finally started to shake.

As a last resort, I opened the family tracking app on my phone.

Her little blue dot was glowing steadily at an unfamiliar address on the industrial edge of town.

I grabbed my keys and drove there, my heart hammering in my throat.

I found her SUV parked silently behind a dark, unmarked building.

A heavy metal door at the back was propped open, harsh fluorescent light spilling out onto the concrete.

I crept up to the opening, fully expecting to find her hurt, or maybe even to catch her with another man.

Instead, I looked inside.

Her phone was sitting on a metal folding table near the door, intentionally turned completely off.

Maeve was perfectly safe.

But when I saw exactly what was inside that hidden room, and what she was so obsessively focused on doing in the center of it, I completely forgot how to breathe.

---

What was Maeve hiding in that room — and why did she turn her phone off so no one could find her?
