Chapter 2: What She'd Been Holding Back

Pamela didn't move for a long moment.
Then her face changed.
The shock faded, and something harder took its place.
"You're choosing him over your own wife."
"I'm choosing the truth over an accusation," I said.
She grabbed her purse off the counter and held it up like evidence.
"Fifty dollars doesn't just disappear, Anthony."
"No," I said.
"But it also doesn't convict a sixteen-year-old boy who was at practice."
Marcus hadn't moved from the doorway.
I could see his jaw tight, his eyes fixed on the floor.
He was trying not to cry and doing a poor job of it.
That was when Pamela said the thing she couldn't take back.
"He's never been your son.
Not really.
And you've spent twelve years pretending otherwise."
The room went completely still.
Marcus looked up.
I looked at her.
She realized what she'd said half a second too late.
"Pamela." My voice came out low.
"What did you just say?"
She set her jaw and looked away.
That was not the reaction of a woman who had misspoken.
That was the reaction of a woman who had just said something she had been holding back for a very long time.
