Chapter 7: The Lie Inside the Truth

Maya stared at the phone.
“You knew?”
“No,” I said.
Daniel’s recording continued.
“He agreed to raise her as his own, but if Claire tells him I kept copies—”
The audio cut off.
Claire shook her head.
“That never happened.
You didn’t know.”
Brooke sent another message: Sign the agreement by noon, or the full recording goes online.
Maya took the phone from my hand.
“The voice sounds wrong.”
“It sounds like Daniel,” Claire said.
“No.
Listen between ‘father’ and ‘knew.’”
Maya played it again.
A faint click separated the words.
I called Evelyn.
“Can someone examine audio as well as documents?”
“My nephew works in digital forensics,” she said.
“Send it now.”
At noon, we met Brooke and Mr.
Keller in a conference room above the salon.
Brooke placed the confidentiality agreement in front of Claire.
“Sign it,” she said.
“I’ll give back ten thousand dollars.”
“You offered twenty yesterday,” I replied.
“Today costs more.”
Claire pushed the agreement away.
“Where did the recording come from?”
“Daniel left it with me.”
“He disliked you.”
“He trusted me more than he trusted you.”
The door opened.
Evelyn entered with her nephew, Reid, carrying a laptop.
Brooke looked at Mr.
Keller.
“Why are they here?”
Reid connected the laptop to a speaker.
“The recording contains fourteen edits.
Several words came from unrelated voicemail messages.”
He played Daniel’s original phrases one by one.
Your father knew came from: Your father knew the dealership owner.
Raise her came from: Raise her appointment time.
Brooke stood.
“That proves nothing about me.”
Reid turned the screen around.
“The edited file was exported yesterday from a computer registered to Hayes Beauty Group.
The user profile was BrookeH.”
Mr.
Keller slowly closed his folder.
“Brooke, you told me the recording was original.”
“It is.”
“He just demonstrated that it isn’t.”
Brooke grabbed the laptop.
Reid pulled it back, and she knocked a glass of water across the table.
Evelyn lifted the forged report before the water reached it.
“You tried to destroy evidence in front of your own attorney,” I said.
Brooke pointed at Claire.
“She still took the money.
She still betrayed all of you.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.
I did.”
Brooke blinked.
“I lied to my husband,” Claire continued.
“I stole from my daughter.
I let fear make my decisions.
But admitting that means you can’t use it to control me anymore.”
Mr.
Keller stood.
“I am ending this meeting.
Brooke, I strongly recommend that you say nothing else.”
“I pay you to speak for me.”
“You gave me falsified evidence.
I no longer represent you.”
He walked out with his folder under his arm.
Brooke turned to Maya.
“Your precious father will never look at you the same once he gets a real test.”
Maya stood beside me.
“He already told me who he is.”
“Then why hasn’t he taken the test?”
“Because I hadn’t decided whether I wanted one.”
Maya placed a sealed Northstar collection kit on the table.
“I’ve decided now.”
Brooke’s smile returned.
“Good.
When the result proves I was right, this family ends.”
Evelyn picked up the kit.
“Results take three business days.”
Brooke moved toward the door.
“Enjoy your last weekend pretending.”
Claire’s phone rang before Brooke reached the stairs.
It was Westlake’s legal department.
“We reviewed the early payoff,” the representative said.
“Brooke submitted a release document carrying Claire’s electronic signature.”
Claire gripped the phone.
May you like
“I never signed a release.”
The representative answered, “Then the $51,000 payment may not be the only transaction she falsified.”
