Chapter 2: The Text I Was Never Supposed to Receive

Part 2 ⬇️
The nurse who treated Lily wrote everything down.
Every bruise.
Every measurement.
Every word Lily said when she thought I wasn't listening.
"Grandma told me big girls don't cry," Lily told her.
"She said Mommy needed her freedom."
I stood at the window so my daughter wouldn't see my face.
At 1:17 a.m., my phone lit up.
Claire.
I let it ring.
Then a text: *Daniel, I can explain.
It wasn't what it looked like.
Call me back RIGHT NOW.*
I turned the phone face down.
The second text came four minutes later — this one from Marcus Vale's number, a number I was never supposed to have: *She doesn't know I'm texting you.
There's something you need to hear before she gets home.
Meet me.*
I stared at that message for a long time.
Why would Marcus Vale warn me?
What did he know that Claire didn't want him to say?
And then Lily tugged my sleeve from the hospital bed, her small voice barely above a whisper.
"Daddy…
Mommy said if you ever found out, we were going to move away.
Far away.
She said you wouldn't be able to find us."
The room went very quiet.
