Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 ⬇️

The hospital kept Lily overnight for observation.

She fell asleep holding my hand, still wearing her stained school shirt because I hadn't thought to bring a change of clothes.

Noah slept in the portable crib beside her, finally full, finally clean.

At 1:17 a.m., Claire called.

I let it ring.

At 1:19, she called again.

Then a text: *"Daniel, Diane said you took the kids somewhere.

What is going on?

Call me."*

I set the phone face-down on the chair beside me and watched my daughter breathe.

At 2:04 a.m., the door to the room opened.

Claire stepped in still wearing the red dress.

Her lipstick was fresh.

She looked at Lily in the hospital bed and her face shifted — not into guilt, but into something calculated.

"Why didn't you call me?" she said quietly.

"Lily did," I said.

"At 10:43."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

"I need you to leave, Claire."

"Daniel, I can explain—"

"I know about Marcus." I kept my voice flat.

"I know about the accounts."

The color left her face.

Then her phone lit up on her purse.

The screen faced me.

The name on it wasn't Marcus.

It was someone I hadn't seen in that footage.

Someone I hadn't expected at all.

What Daniel found on that phone changed everything he thought he knew.
