Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Box

Inside the box were photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every school play Maya had missed.

Every birthday she wasn't there for.

Every Christmas morning with six little girls and no mother in sight.

Adele had printed them all out and arranged them carefully inside that box.

She looked at Maya and said, calmly:

"I wanted you to see what you missed.

Every single thing you chose not to be there for."

Maya's face twisted.

She grabbed Adele's arm and hissed:

"You're embarrassing me in front of everyone.

I am your MOTHER."

Adele didn't flinch.

"You were never my mother.

You were just the woman who left."

The room went completely silent.

Then Adele reached back into the box and pulled out one final photograph.

I couldn't see it clearly from where I was standing.

But when Maya saw it, the color drained from her face.

Her designer handbag slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.

She whispered something.

Just two words.

Too quiet for most people to hear.

But I heard them.

And I felt the ground shift beneath me.

Because what that photograph proved changed everything I thought I knew about the day she walked out.

What was in that final photograph?

What did Maya whisper — and what secret has she been hiding for fifteen years?
