Chapter 2: What My Mother Called Protection

My mother answered on the second ring.
"Ethan.
How was the gala?"
"Tell me about Maya Bennett."
Silence.
Not the silence of someone confused.
The silence of someone caught.
"Where did you hear that name?"
"She was cleaning rooms at our hotel last night.
Vanessa poured water over her head."
Another pause.
Then, carefully: "That's unfortunate."
"Mom."
"Ethan, that was a long time ago—"
"What did you do?"
Her voice shifted.
Cooler.
The tone she used when she had already decided how a conversation would end.
"I protected this family."
My hand tightened on the phone.
"From a hotel cleaner?"
"From a woman who was going to cost you everything."
"She left me.
You didn't need to do anything."
The silence that followed was different.
Longer.
"She didn't leave you, Ethan."
My chest went cold.
"What?"
"I went to see her.
I made her understand that staying would only hurt you both."
"You paid her."
"I gave her options."
"How much?"
She didn't answer.
"How much did you pay her to leave me?"
"It wasn't only money." Her voice was almost gentle now.
"I told her if she stayed, I would make sure she never worked in this city again.
She had a sick mother, Ethan.
She made a practical choice."
I couldn't speak.
Six years.
May you like
Maya had spent six years believing I let it happen.
And somewhere in this building, she was still wearing a uniform my family had nearly taken from her a second time.
