Chapter 2: The Name on the Doorframe

I sat at my workbench until 3 a.m., the account statements spread in front of me.
Seventeen transfers.
Small enough not to trigger a flag.
Large enough to hollow out everything I had built over thirty years.
My wife had started moving money the same week Sabrina's biological father came back into their lives.
I picked up the phone and called my lawyer.
"How fast can you freeze the accounts?" I asked.
"By morning," he said.
"But if they find out before the wedding—"
"They won't."
I put the phone down just as I heard footsteps in the hall.
My wife appeared in the doorway.
She looked at the papers on the table and her face went still.
"You should be sleeping," she said.
"I was just thinking," I said.
"About the venue deposit.
The one paid from the trust."
She didn't move.
But her hand gripped the doorframe.
"The venue called today," I said quietly.
"They needed the owner's signature to confirm the catering contract."
She forced a small smile.
"We can sort that tomorrow."
"They already have my signature," I said.
"Because the venue belongs to me."
The smile disappeared.
Then her phone buzzed on the counter.
She turned it face-down before I could see the name.
But I already knew who was calling.
