Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

I grabbed Claire's wrist before she could take another step back.

"Show me the phone, Claire."

"You're overreacting," she said.

But her voice was shaking.

"Our daughter's entire future is gone.

Show.

Me.

The phone."

She finally handed it over.

The screen was still open on a banking app — but it wasn't our joint account.

It was an account I had never seen before.

The name on it wasn't Claire's.

It was a man's name.

My throat tightened.

"Who is Daniel Marsh?"

Claire said nothing.

"Claire.

Who is he?"

"It's not what you think."

I scrolled up.

Transfer after transfer.

Twelve months of them.

The amounts matched exactly — $51,000 moved in small pieces so no single transaction would look suspicious.

My hands went cold.

Maya was standing in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

"Dad," she whispered.

"That name…

I've seen it before."

I looked at her.

"He came to the house.

Twice.

When you were traveling for work."

Claire's face went white.

Then her phone buzzed in my hand.

A new message from Daniel Marsh appeared on the screen.

I read the first line — and the room seemed to tilt.
