Chapter 1: She Came to Dinner in a Wedding Dress

My widowed mom arrived at family dinner wearing a wedding dress just weeks after her husband's death — when I asked what was going on, she said, "I need you to come with me."
A few weeks ago, I lost my father.
My parents had been married for more than forty years.
They had built almost their entire lives together, so watching Mom suddenly face a world without Dad by her side was heartbreaking.
She was completely broken.
For the first few weeks, she barely seemed like herself.
Nothing interested her anymore.
She stopped seeing friends, and even getting through an ordinary day seemed difficult.
I visited her several times a week, but I still hated the thought of her sitting alone in that quiet house.
So my husband and I started inviting her over for dinner every Saturday.
At first, Mom barely spoke.
She'd sit with us, pick at her food, and leave early.
But slowly, things began to change.
She started laughing at my husband's jokes again.
She'd stay for dessert, ask about our week, and sometimes even arrive carrying something she'd baked.
For the first time since Dad d*ed, it felt like I was getting my mother back.
Then, one Saturday evening, I was setting the table when I heard the front door open.
"Mom, we're in the dining room!" I called.
A moment later, she stepped in, and I nearly dropped the plates in my hands.
Mom was wearing a wedding dress.
A real wedding dress.
I just stared at her, trying to understand what I was seeing.
Only weeks had passed since we'd buried Dad, and now she was standing in my dining room dressed like a bride.
"Mom...
what's going on?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked over, took the plates from my hands, and carefully set them on the table.
Then she looked directly at me and reached for my hand.
"I need you to come with me."
