Chapter 2: The Name on the Back

The drawer opened.

Inside was a single manila envelope, yellowed at the edges.

Mom lifted it slowly.

Her hands were shaking.

Melissa grabbed her arm.

"Mom.

Please.

Just leave it."

"Let go of me."

Mom's voice was quiet.

Steady.

The kind of quiet that stops a room.

She opened the envelope.

Inside were documents.

A photograph.

And a folded letter with handwriting I didn't recognize.

Mom stared at the photograph for a long moment.

Then she looked up at Melissa.

"How long?"

Melissa said nothing.

"How long have you known?"

"Mom, it's not what you think—"

"Don't." Mom set the photograph face-down on the table.

"Don't tell me what I think."

I tried to see the photograph.

Melissa shifted to block my view.

But I caught one thing before she moved.

A name written on the back in black marker.

It wasn't my name.

It wasn't Melissa's.

It was a name I had never heard in this family before.

Mom folded the letter back into the envelope without reading it aloud.

She stood up slowly, walked to the window, and stood with her back to all of us.

Nobody spoke.

Then Melissa's phone buzzed on the table.

We all saw the screen.

The name on that call matched the name on the back of that photograph.

What is inside that envelope — and who is that name?

The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
