Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Briefcase

PART 2 ⬇️

They lifted me onto the stretcher just as the shouting from the ballroom grew louder.

Through the open bathroom door I could see officers moving fast down the corridor.

One of them stopped when he saw me.

"Ma'am, are you Audrey Sterling?"

"Yes."

He looked at the paramedics.

"Get her out now."

As they wheeled me past the storage rooms, I heard Eleanor's voice cut through the noise.

"This is private property!

You have no right—"

"Ma'am, step back."

"Do you know who we are?"

"Yes.

That's why we're here."

I turned my head as the stretcher passed the corridor entrance.

Eleanor was standing at the edge of the ballroom, two officers beside her.

Her face was white.

Not angry anymore.

Afraid.

Seraphina stood a few feet away still in her wedding gown, mascara already running.

Julian was at the far end of the room.

He wasn't looking at his sister.

He wasn't looking at his mother.

He was staring directly at me.

And in that moment I saw it — not rage, not guilt.

Recognition.

He finally understood what was in that briefcase.

Another contraction hit as they pushed me through the service exit into the night air.

Diana's voice was still in my ear.

"Audrey.

There's something you don't know yet."

I gripped the stretcher rail.

"What?"

"Julian didn't just sign those transfers."

She paused.

"He opened the accounts.

Every single one.

Three years before you two ever met."
