Chapter 2: The Key He Never Explained

It was a key.
Small, old, brass — the kind that opens a lockbox, not a door.
I stood there shaking, Sophie staring up at me with wide eyes.
The last time I saw that key, Dad was slipping it into his shirt pocket the night Laura walked out and never came back.
I'd forgotten about it for forty years.
I drove straight to the nursing home.
Dad was sitting by the window when I walked in.
The moment he saw my face, something shifted in his eyes.
I held up the key without a word.
The color left his face.
"Where did you get that?" he whispered.
"From Laura's sweater, Dad.
The one Sophie's cleaning lady gave her today."
He turned back toward the window.
"Dad.
Look at me."
Silence.
"Is Laura alive?"
His hands gripped the armrest.
His jaw tightened.
Then, very quietly, he said, "You should leave that alone."
"She was my sister."
He closed his eyes.
"Dad — does this key open something?
What were you hiding?"
He didn't answer.
But a single tear ran down the side of his face.
And that told me everything I needed to know.
He knew something.
He had always known something.
I drove home with the key in my fist — and found a folded note tucked inside Sophie's school bag that hadn't been there that morning.
It said: *Don't show your father.*

What that note meant — and what the key unlocked — is in the full story.
