Chapter 2: What He Hadn't Shown Me Yet

PART 2 ⬇️
Terrence sat at my kitchen table for a long time after that.
Not talking.
Just staring at the registry printout like it might change if he looked at it long enough.
Then his phone lit up.
Lennox.
He let it ring.
It rang again.
Then again.
Then a text came through and I watched his face go completely still.
"What does it say?" I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
*"Don't you dare show your mother anything.
This is between us.
Come home RIGHT NOW."*
There was no hotel listed.
No address.
Just *come home* — as if home still existed somewhere.
"Where is she staying?" I asked.
He looked up slowly.
"Maribel's."
My stomach dropped.
"Terrence.
She went straight to Maribel's house?"
He nodded.
I thought about that for a moment.
About what it meant that Lennox's first call after losing the confrontation was not to a friend, not to family — but to the same woman who had taken $300,000 and put Lennox's name on nothing.
"Did Maribel know?" I asked carefully.
"From the beginning — did she know Lennox never told you the truth about the ownership?"
Terrence was quiet for too long.
Then he said, "Mom…
I think there's something else.
Something in those bank records I haven't shown you yet."
He reached into his jacket pocket.

What Terrence pulled out next stopped me cold.
