Chapter 2: Three Words and an Open Door
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Avery sat up in bed.
"Mom?
What does it say?"
I couldn't answer her.
Not yet.
The letter was handwritten — careful, neat — and it started with four words that stopped my breath:
*"I know about Avery."*
I read the next lines slowly, certain I was misunderstanding something.
I wasn't.
The letter said that someone had been watching our story for months.
That they had seen the fundraiser page I quietly set up and then took down because I was too proud to ask strangers for help.
That they had called the hospital — not to ask about Avery's condition, but to ask what would make her smile.
And then, near the bottom of the page, one sentence that made me sit down on the floor:
*"The castle stay is paid in full.
So is what comes next.
Please don't argue.
Just let someone love your daughter too."*
"Mom." Avery's voice was small.
"Are you crying?"
I looked up at her — this ten-year-old who had been so brave for so long — and I couldn't hold it together.
"Who wrote it?" she asked.
I turned to the last line to find a name.
There was no name.
Only three more words.
*"Check the hallway."*
I stood up slowly and opened the door.
What I saw made me cover my mouth.
