Maya's fingers dug into my shoulder.
"Daddy.
He's behind you."
I turned.
Julian was standing at the back door.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't shouting.
He just stood there with his arms crossed, watching us with a look that made my skin crawl.
"She's not supposed to leave," he said.
"Elena gave me full authority while she's away."
"She's ten years old," I said.
"She was in a cage."
He didn't even blink.
"She was being disciplined.
That's a family matter."
I pulled Maya closer and moved toward the side gate.
Julian stepped off the porch.
"You're trespassing.
I'll call the police."
"Go ahead," I said.
"Call them right now.
I want them here."
He stopped moving.
And that hesitation told me everything.
Maya pressed her lips to my ear and whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.
"Daddy…
the bags in the pool.
He said if I told anyone, the same thing would happen to me."
My legs nearly gave out.
I looked back at the pool.
The water was dark.
Still.
The black bags sat motionless at the bottom.
Then my phone rang.
It was Elena.
And Julian's expression shifted the moment he saw her name on my screen.
