Chapter 1: The Lunchbox She Never Ate

My teenage daughter packed an extra lunchbox every morning for the homeless man near her school — today, he knocked on our front door and said, "There's something your daughter is too terrified to tell you."

My husband and I always tried to raise our 15-year-old daughter, Chloe, to be a kind and honest person.

But a few months ago, I noticed something strange.

She was coming home absolutely famished every afternoon, immediately raiding the pantry the moment she walked through the door, despite the large lunches I packed her.

After a week of this, I decided to test her in the car.

"Was the chicken in your lunchbox good today, honey?"

Chloe smiled.

"Yeah, it was really good, thanks."

I turned to look at her.

"I didn't pack chicken today, Chloe.

Now tell me the truth."

Her face dropped, and she guiltily looked down at her hands.

After a heavy sigh, she softly confessed that she had been giving her entire lunch to an older homeless man near her high school because he looked so frail and hungry.

My frustration instantly melted into immense pride.

I hugged her, and from that day forward, I gladly packed two separate lunchboxes — one for Chloe, and a specially made one for her new friend.

For months, she left every morning with both bags, and I felt so proud of the thoughtful young woman we had raised.

But this morning, about an hour after Chloe left for school, there was a knock on my front door.

I opened it and was shocked to see the older, weathered-looking man Chloe had described.

He was standing on my porch, holding the familiar blue lunchbox I had just packed.

"Good morning," he said quietly.

"Good morning," I replied, staring at the lunchbox in complete confusion.

"How do you know where we live?"

His expression was deeply concerned as he looked right into my eyes.

"That's not important right now," he said, holding the untouched lunchbox out to me.

"There's something your daughter is too terrified to tell you."

What is Chloe hiding — and why is she too terrified to say it herself?
