Chapter 2: The Photograph That Should Not Exist

**— Part 2 —**
Inside the box was a photograph.
A hospital photo.
A newborn girl, wrapped in a white blanket, with a tiny bracelet around her wrist.
The bracelet read: *Lily.
Born 6:14 a.m.*
Logan's hands were shaking so hard he nearly dropped it.
"Mom." His voice was barely a sound.
"She's alive in this picture."
I couldn't speak.
The photo wasn't from the night of the birth.
The timestamp on the back read three days later.
Three days after I was told she was gone.
"Who took this?" Logan whispered.
I turned the photo over again.
In the bottom corner, in the same handwriting as the note, were four words:
*She didn't d!e, Mom.*
The ground felt like it was moving under me.
Logan grabbed my arm.
"Mom.
If someone took this picture three days after she was born — where did Lily go?"
I had no answer.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
*"You have 24 hours to decide whether Logan learns the rest.
After that, I go to the press."*
Logan read it over my shoulder.
He looked at me — and for the first time in his fifteen years, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.
He wasn't sure he could trust me.
