Chapter 1: The Words I Was Never Meant to Hear

My stepsister begged me to be her surrogate after years of failed IVF — but at 8 months pregnant, I overheard her on the phone saying, "She can't find out the truth before the baby is born."
My stepsister, Penelope, had wanted to become a mother for as long as I'd known her.
She and her husband had spent years going through IVF, but one attempt after another had failed.
Eventually, the treatments drained most of their savings, and continuing became almost impossible financially.
At family gatherings, I'd catch Penelope watching relatives with their children, forcing a smile while her eyes filled with tears.
It broke my heart.
I already had two wonderful children of my own, and seeing how desperately she wanted what I'd been lucky enough to have made me wish I could help.
Then, one evening, Penelope came to my house alone.
We were seated in the kitchen when she reached across the table and took my hand.
"I need to ask you something huge," she said.
"I know I have no right to expect you to say yes, but...
would you carry our baby?"
"You're asking me to be your surrogate?"
Penelope nodded, already crying.
"You're my sister, and you've had two healthy pregnancies.
I don't know who else I could trust with something this important."
I knew I needed to talk to my husband and think it over carefully, but seeing her so heartbroken made me want to say yes right then and there.
A week later, I agreed.
Months passed, and Penelope was there for every appointment, constantly checking on me and preparing for the baby she'd waited years to meet.
By the time I was eight months pregnant, my belly was huge, the nursery was ready, and we were counting down the weeks until the birth.
Then, one afternoon, I stopped by Penelope's house after a routine appointment.
She was in another room on the phone, and I was about to call out to her when I heard my name.
I froze.
Then Penelope lowered her voice and said,
"She can't find out the truth before the baby is born."
