Chapter 2: The Housekeeper's Hands

Daniel didn't move.

He stood in the doorway, his face completely still — the kind of still that isn't calm.

It's controlled.

Maya watched him.

She had worked in this house for three years.

She knew every sound, every routine, every lie that passed through these walls.

And right now, Daniel's silence was the loudest thing in the room.

"Daniel." She kept her voice steady.

"Do you know that man?"

He looked at her.

Then at Noah.

Then at the frozen frame on the security screen.

"No," he said.

"I've never seen him."

Noah's small hand tightened around Maya's arm.

"He's lying," Noah whispered.

"That man came to our old house.

He and Daddy talked for a long time.

Then Mommy got sick."

Lauren made a sound — half laugh, half something else.

"He's six years old.

He doesn't know what he's saying."

But the housekeeper, Mrs.

Aldridge, had gone completely white.

She was staring at the screen too.

And her hands were shaking.

Maya noticed.

"Mrs.

Aldridge.

You've seen him before, haven't you."

It wasn't a question.

The old woman's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen — and dropped it.

What Mrs.

Aldridge saw on that phone changed everything.
