Chapter 2: The Notebook With Two Years of Dates

My dad carried me inside, wrapped me in his coat, and held me so tight I could feel his heart pounding.

Karen stood in the living room with her arms crossed.

"It was five minutes," she said.

"He's being dramatic."

One of the officers stepped forward.

"Ma'am, the child is seven years old.

Karen's eyes moved to me.

"That's…

Grandma spoke from the doorway, her voice steady and low.

"Behind my back?"

"Behind your back?" my dad said slowly.

"He's my son, Karen."

The second officer had been writing in his notepad.

He looked up.

"Sir, we're going to need to ask a few more questions.

Separately."

Karen's face went pale.

And that's when Grandma reached into her bag and placed something on the table.

A small notebook.

With dates written on the cover going back two years.
