Chapter 2: The Phone That Remembered Everything

**— PART 2 —**
Karen's face went white the moment she saw the uniforms.
"This is a misunderstanding," she said quickly.
"He spilled something and I just needed him to calm down."
One of the officers looked past her at me — still shaking, still in my thin pajamas.
"How long was the child outside, ma'am?"
Karen opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
My father didn't wait for her answer.
"He's seven years old, Karen.
Seven."
His voice was low.
That was worse than the shouting.
Grandma knelt down and wrapped her coat around me.
Her hands were trembling, but her eyes were steady.
She pulled me close and whispered something I'll never forget.
"Show them the phone, sweetheart."
I reached into my pocket and held it out.
The officer looked at the screen.
Then at Karen.
Then at my father.
"Sir…
there are previous calls on this device.
This wasn't the first time."
The room went completely still.
My father turned slowly toward Karen.
And Karen took one small step back.
