Chapter 2: The Document She Recognized

The room went completely still.
Carla's smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded — slowly — like she was trying to decide whether to laugh it off or run.
She didn't run.
"I'm sorry," she said, her voice suddenly smaller.
"Do I know you?"
The principal didn't answer her question.
He turned to the audience instead.
"This evening was supposed to celebrate our students," he said.
"But something came to my attention today that I can't ignore."
He looked directly at Carla.
"Ma'am, are you the legal guardian of these two children?"
Carla straightened.
"I'm their stepmother.
Yes."
"And you have full control of their late mother's estate?"
The word estate landed like a stone dropped into still water.
I felt Noah grab my hand beside me.
Carla's jaw tightened.
"That's a private matter."
"It was," the principal said quietly.
"Until one of your stepchildren's teachers contacted our school counselor this week."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
My stomach dropped.
I had never seen that document before.
But the look on Carla's face told me she had.
Her phone slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.
Nobody moved to pick it up.
