Chapter 2: The Name She Didn't Want Spoken

The room went completely still.
Carla's smile didn't disappear all at once.
It just...
faded.
Like she suddenly remembered something she'd spent a long time trying to forget.
The principal looked at her calmly.
He didn't raise his voice.
"Mrs.
Carla Hendricks," he said.
"Or is it still Carla Voss?"
A few parents near her stepped back.
Carla laughed — but it came out wrong.
Too high.
Too fast.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she said.
The principal nodded slowly.
"I think you do."
He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"This dress," he said, turning toward me, "was entered into the state youth design competition last week.
By your brother Noah."
The crowd murmured.
"He won."
I heard Noah make a sound behind me.
Small and stunned.
Then the principal looked back at Carla.
"The prize includes a full academic scholarship.
Funded by a trust." He paused.
"A trust set up twelve years ago — by a woman named Margaret Ellison."
Carla's face went white.
"That name mean anything to you?" the principal asked quietly.
Carla said nothing.
But her hand was shaking.
And her phone had just lit up with a message she clearly didn't want anyone to see.
---
What Carla was hiding had nothing to do with the dress — and everything to do with that name.

What the principal revealed next left the entire room speechless.
