Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Part 2 ⬇️

Inside the box was a single piece of paper.

Printed.

Folded once.

No ribbon.

No card.

Melissa snatched it out and read it.

Her hands started shaking.

"What is this?"

"You know exactly what it is," Dad said.

His voice was calm.

Melissa looked up.

"You can't be serious."

"I've never been more serious in my life."

Grandma hadn't moved.

She was still standing by the mirror, tissue in her hand, lipstick half-wiped.

She looked small suddenly.

Like she was trying to disappear.

I stepped closer to her.

Melissa threw the paper onto the dresser.

"After everything I've done for this family—"

"For this family?" Dad cut her off.

"Name one thing.

One."

The room went silent.

Then Melissa's phone buzzed on the nightstand.

She glanced at the screen and something crossed her face — not anger.

Something closer to fear.

She didn't pick it up.

Dad saw it too.

He walked over, looked at the screen, and went very still.

"Who is Michael?" he said quietly.

Melissa said nothing.

"Who.

Is.

Michael."

She reached for the phone.

Dad got there first.

What's on that phone — and who is Michael?

What Dad found next changed everything.
