Chapter 2: The Notebook and the Note

It was a small notebook.

Worn at the edges, with my handwriting inside.

Every chore.

Every order.

Every humiliating thing Angela had said to me over the past two days — I had written it all down.

But that wasn't what made her face go scarlet.

Tucked inside the front cover was a note in Dad's handwriting.

*"Angela.

I set up a camera at the campsite before you left.

I saw everything.

We'll talk when you get home."*

The fire crackled.

Nobody moved.

One of her friends whispered, "Oh my God."

Angela's hands were shaking.

"He's bluffing," she said.

But her voice came out thin.

"Is he?" another friend said quietly.

She was already stepping back.

Angela spun toward me.

"You told him.

You planned this with him."

"I didn't tell him anything."

That was the truth.

I hadn't said a word to Dad.

Which meant he had figured it out on his own.

Angela looked back down at the note.

Then at the notebook.

Then at me.

And for the first time all weekend, she had nothing to say.

But what happened when we got home — what Dad had actually seen, and what Angela did next — was something none of us were ready for.

---

What did Dad's camera capture — and what did Angela do when she got home?
